When it comes to getting in shape, people think about dieting and exercising. The great thing is that this sort of approach can effectively deal with excess weight, lack of energy and all the other negatives that come from being out of shape. However, while there’s plenty of good plans that a person can follow when it comes to nutrition, being as effective as possible when exercising can also make a huge difference in how effective and how quickly a person loses weight and gets into shape.

There are thousands – if not millions – of people that want to know how to get in shape quickly. One of the best ways, from an exercise standpoint, is to start lifting weights. Cardiovascular exercise is always good. Simple exercises, such as walking, can be extremely helpful, especially to people who are significantly overweight. Running can cause too much stress on a person’s lower extremities and depending on a person’s heart health, running may not be the best option in the immediate. However, lifting weights offer something that cardiovascular exercise can’t.

While cardio exercise can help improve stamina and endurance, it has little impact on a person’s metabolism much past the actual exercise activity. Having a higher metabolism means a person’s body is burning more calories. One way to kick start a person’s metabolism is to start lifting weights. The reason for this is that weightlifting increases metabolism far beyond when a person stops lifting weights. A person’s body will actually be burning more calories hours after lifting weights than is the case when a person does cardiovascular exercises.

The good thing is a person doesn’t have to lift weights simply to build muscle. Light lifting will help to stimulate and build muscle, so a person doesn’t have to worry about bulking up. Stimulating and growing those muscles with light weightlifting, for example, will have an impact on the body’s metabolism that allows a person to burn more calories than they could with virtually any other exercise.

A good approach if you’re trying to lose weight and to get into better shape is to watch what you eat, get a certain amount of cardio exercise and make sure to lift weights. It doesn’t have to be heavy weights, but stimulating muscle through resistance training is the best way to improve metabolism and to burn more calories.
